Pilot returns safely after ejection from F-35 crash at Utah Air Force Base
A pilot was rescued to safety after an F-35 fighter jet crashed Wednesday at Hill Air Force Base south of Ogden, Utah, according to the 388th Fighter Wing.
The F-35A Lightning II crashed around 6:15 p.m. Local time at the north end of the base's runway, Tsubasa said on social media.
"The pilot was ejected, rescued and taken to a local medical center for observation," Hill Air Force Base tweeted. Additional information on the pilot's condition could not be obtained.
Wings said the cause of the crash was not known and was being investigated.
Video from the scene showed a large amount of smoke billowing from the air force base after the military plane crashed.
Scott Phillips, who lives nearby, told CNN he saw the plane crash.
"I'm at home.... mowing the lawn and watching the F-35s come down, like they do every night. We love watching them come home," Phillips said.
"They usually came to the South as they did today. On approach, one seemed to lose strength and jumped too deep under the tree. The next thing I saw was fire."
According to its website, Hill Air Force Base is an Air Force material command base. It is the second largest Air Force base by population and geographic size.
